On September 26, 2024, Nepal Development Research Institute (NDRI) marked a historic achievement as NDRI was honored with the prestigious 'Niti Samman 2081' (Policy Award/Honor 2024) in Kathmandu during the 6thanniversary celebration of the Policy Research Institute (PRI)—the government think tank of Nepal, in recognition to the invaluable contribution to Nepal’s policy research ecosystem and evidence-based policy-making system through research, feedback, advocacy, and capacity building in various policy areas. NDRI President, Dr. Krishna Pahari, on behalf of NDRI, received the Niti Samman 2081 from the Right Hon’ble Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Devraj Ghimire (Chief Guest).

The event was also graced by the Hon’ble Chairpersons of various Parliamentary Committees and many other distinguished dignitaries. Dr. Yuba Raj Khatiwada (Economic and Development Advisor to the Hon’ble Prime Minister, and Former Finance Minister) and Prof. Dr. Suresh Raj Sharma (Former Vice Chancellor of the Kathmandu University) delivered keynote speeches highlighting the role of think tanks in national development.
Prof. Dr. Lekhnath Sharma, Executive Chairman of PRI, presented a detailed overview of the Institute's activities and future plans. The ceremony included the presentation of annual employee awards, th
e release of new publications by PRI, and the honoring of organizations making significant contributions to policy research and promotion in Nepal. NDRI was honored with "Niti Samman 2081" and a cash award of NPR 1 lakh.
The "Niti Samman 2081" award was the result of a rigorous selection process among 125 research organizations identified across Nepal. An independent committee evaluated institutions based on various indicators, including policy research, feedback, advocacy, capacity development activities, and digital presence. NDRI emerged as the top institution, showcasing xcellence in evidence-based research and impactful contributions to public policy. Similarly, Samriddhi Foundation and the Institute for Strategic and Socio-Economic Research (ISSR) received the “Neeti Prashamsaapatra” (letter of appreciation) on the occasion.

Upon receiving the award, Dr. Krishna Pahari (President, NDRI) expressed his gratitude and emphasized NDRI’s relentless journey in shaping policy-making in Nepal supported by evidence through quality research. He highlighted how NDRI has consistently worked to bridge the gap between research and policy, thereby contributing to the sustainable development of the country.

The 'Niti Samman 2081' is a reflection of NDRI's commitment to advancing public policy through quality research, critical analysis, and active engagement with policymakers. Over the years, NDRI has contributed to various policy areas, including Tobacco Taxation Policy, Railway Development, Enterprise Development, Water Resource Management, Disaster Management, Food Security, Education, GESI and so on, providing evidence-based recommendations to shape sound policies for equitable development.
The ceremony was attended by high-level dignitaries, representing ministries, universities, research institutions, think tanks, and independent experts. The Chief Guest, Hon’ble Speaker Mr. Devraj Ghimire, appreciated the progress made by PRI, congratulated the awardees and emphasized the importance of rigorous policy research in shaping national policies and supporting the aspirations of "Happy Nepali, Prosperous Nepal."
